The Department of Public Works is contracted with Veolia Water to manage and maintain the sanitary sewer collection system and wastewater treatment facility. The collection system transports the discharged sanitary (“dirty”) water from residences and businesses to the treatment facility via underground pipes, which are both publicly and privately owned.

The Public Side – The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining the pump stations and main sewer lines. The sewer mains are the underground pipes transporting sewage between manholes, typically located in the middle of roadway.

The Private Side – The property owner is responsible for maintaining their internal plumbing, the sewer lateral from the structure to the main line, and the clean-out and back flow valve. The sewer lateral consists of two parts, the building lateral and the street lateral, which are separated by the clean-out. The building lateral, which runs from the structure to the clean-out, is entirely owned and maintained by the property owner. The street lateral, which runs from the clean-out to the main line, is owned by the property owner, but can be flushed and inspected by Veolia Water as a courtesy in the event of a sewer back-up. Please note that the courtesy service is not a fix to the problem but rather a temporary relief to allow the property owner to retain an independent contractor to make the proper repairs. The clean-out must be accessible to utilize this service.

The City of Cranston's sewer design criteria is outlined in Annex A - Design of Sewers. Please reference this document for direction on sewer installation and repair in the city. Sewer reviews and approvals are conducted in coordination with Veolia Water and approved by the City.

The City of Cranston is proposing a revision to its Industrial Pretreatment Program for Local Limits for discharge to the Water Pollution Control Facility. Please see the links to the left which detail the Local Limits Evaluation and proposed changes to the Sewer Service System Use Ordinance.
