INFORMATION ON CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

March 3, 2020

Dear Neighbors:

Like many of you, the City is closely monitoring developments regarding the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Cranston, our state and across the nation. Although we have not been informed of any cases in our city, it is incredibly important to be informed and prepared.

What the City of Cranston is doing:

• We are in constant contact with the RI Department of Health and following their guidance
• We are coordinating information with all our city departments, including our Schools and Libraries, about best practices to follow
• Our City Building Maintenance staff are cleaning thoroughly with commercial grade cleaners and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces like door handles, knobs, railings, and bathroom fixtures

What you can do:

Here are some commonsense measures that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that you and your family can take to lower the risk of contracting and spreading the infection:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
• Stay home when you are sick
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
• If you believe you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, please contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Where you can get RELIABLE information:

In these moments, it is also important to be cautious about false information, including that which may be spread on social media. Please turn to trusted and reliable sources like the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which are striving to keep the public up to date on the latest regarding the situation. Sincerely,

Allan W. Fung

Mayor
