CRANSTON – With high temperatures continuing this week, and throughout the summer, Mayor Ken Hopkins announced the early opening of the city’s splashpad, the upcoming YMCA swim program, and cooling center hours for residents seeking to beat the heat. Residents can look forward to these accessible and enjoyable options for staying cool and safe during the sweltering days ahead.
The splashpad off Oak Street near Hugh B. Bain Middle School and the Cooney Playground was originally set to open on July 7, but Mayor Hopkins said the high temperatures encouraged an early start to allow children and families a chance to cool off. He emphasized the importance of community spaces like the splash pad in fostering social interaction and healthy lifestyles.
“As temperatures soar, it's crucial that we provide safe and accessible options for our community to stay cool and comfortable,” Mayor Hopkins said. “Our initiatives, from the early opening of the splash pad to the community swim program, are designed to ensure that everyone in Cranston can enjoy the summer safely. We are committed to making our city a place where residents can find relief from the heat while engaging in healthy and enjoyable activities.”
SPLASH PAD
The splash pad at Cooney Playground invites families to play in the refreshing sprays and playful atmosphere. The splash pad is now open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the summer season.
Community Swim Program at YMCA
Starting July 7, the YMCA's Community Swim Program will offer a welcoming environment for swimming and relaxation, free of charge to Cranston residents. The program begins on July 7 and runs through August 11. Hours are Mondays, 10 a.m. to Noon, Fridays, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 1 to 3 p.m. at the local YMCA (1225 Park Avenue).
